Background

Dr Stephen Allen is a Senior Lecturer in Law at Queen Mary, University of London, and a Barrister (Door Tenant) at 5 Essex Chambers.

He was Called to the Bar in 1992 (Inner Temple). He is also a consultant barrister with Albertson Solicitors, 14 Old Square, Lincoln’s Inn, London.

Dr Allen has recently undertaken advisory work for sovereign clients involving various aspects of International Law (including matters concerning the Law of Immunities, International Human rights Law, and the Law of International Organisations). His expertise encompasses Territorial and Maritime disputes (including land boundary claims and maritime delimitation); Jurisdiction and Immunities; Treaty Law, Law of International Responsibility; International Human Rights Law; Law of Armed Conflict and Dispute Resolution.

He has written several research monographs on International Law, including Allen & Trinidad, The Western Sahara Question and International Law: Recognition Doctrine and Self-determination (Routledge, 2024); Allen, The Chagos Islanders and International Law (Hart Publishing, 2014); and Castellino & Allen, Title to Territory in International Law: A Temporal Analysis (Ashgate, 2003). He has also co-edited several books, including The Oxford Handbook of Jurisdiction in International Law (OUP, 2019); The Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Marine Areas (Hart, 2019); Fifty Years of the British Indian Ocean Territory: Legal Perspectives (Springer, 2018); and Reflections on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (Hart, 2011). He has also published numerous articles in leading international law journals and periodicals.
