About Us

For more than 70 years, our barristers have acted in high-profile, complex litigation. With outstanding expertise in public, information and police law, our team combines award-winning legal knowledge with exceptional client care.

Formerly known as 5 Essex Court, in November 2023 chambers moved from its place of origin in Middle Temple to its new home in Gray’s Inn. With the move came the need for a change of name and a rebrand to 5 Essex Chambers.

With over 50 barristers, we are a top tier set of chambers recognised for our exemplary client service, depth and breadth of experience in our specialist areas and outstanding quality of counsel. Chambers has a formidable reputation in its core areas of practice — police law, public/administrative law, public inquiries, inquests, investigations, professional disciplinary/regulatory, information law, employment law and civil liberties and human rights.

Our barristers, many of whom are recognised as leaders in their field, have appeared in some of the UK’s most significant civil law cases, inquests and inquiries over the last decades. We represent a broad range of clients in both the public and private sectors across the United Kingdom. We pride ourselves in providing our clients exceptional expertise, a collaborative approach and outstanding client care.

One of Chambers’ areas of expertise is working with central Government and this is reflected by the fact that almost half of our members have been appointed to the A-G’s Panel of Counsel.
