On 21 January 2021, PC Jonathan Broadhead activated his taser against a 10-year-old child in her home, having responded to a 999 call from the child’s mother (Miss A).
Miss A had reported that her daughter had possession of garden shears and a hammer, using them to damage the home and threatening to use those weapons against her. By the time of the Officer’s arrival, the child was in the kitchen before walking into the hallway and picking up the shears. She was tasered twice by the Officer as she ascended the stairs to her home.
On 30 November 2023, following a 4-day hearing, a Police Misconduct Panel determined that, on the particular facts of this case, the force used by PC Jonathan Broadhead was necessary, reasonable and proportionate.
Olivia Checa-Dover acted for the IOPC, who presented the case.
