The oral hearings of the Renewable Heat Incentive Inquiry begin today in Belfast. The Inquiry was established under the Inquiries Act 2005 by Northern Ireland’s Finance Minister to investigate how a non-domestic renewable heat incentive scheme, set up to assist in complying with obligations imposed by the law of the European Union in the area of renewable energy, was devised, implemented, operated and suspended. The Inquiry is chaired by a recently retired judge of the Court of Appeal in Northern Ireland, the Right Honourable Sir Patrick Coghlin. Jason, who specialises in public inquiries (this is his 16th public inquiry) is leading counsel for the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority (better known as ‘Ofgem’). More information about the Inquiry can be found here and here.
