On 14 May 2010, Stephen Timms MP was stabbed by Roshonara Choudhry whilst holding a constituency surgery. On 2 November 2010, she was found guilty of attempted murder and jailed for life with a minimum term of 15 years. Ms Choudhry is thought to be the first Al-Qaeda sympathiser to attempt an assassination in Britain.
Having served the minimum term, the parole board decided Ms Choudhry can be released from the custodial part of her life sentence. Following an application made by counter-terrorism police officers within the Metropolitan Police Service, the High Court granted a Serious Crime Prevention Order to protect the public upon Ms Choudhry’s release.
