Victoria von Wachter represented the family in the inquest relating to the death of their toddler Louis, the case involving Sudden Unexpected Death of Child (SUDC). The Coroners conclusion was that death was by natural causes. Far more significantly, the inquest revealed significant failings in the information flow and management of babies and toddlers suffering from single/complex/nighttime or recurrent seizures by both the NHS and the ambulance service. This resulted in a Prevention of Future Deaths (PFD) report being sent to NHS England, NICE, The Royal College of Paediatricians and JCALT (Ambulance).
Also of significance was a letter of concern being sent to the General Medical Council (GMC) in respect of the unsatisfactory treatment and service level afforded to Louis by his GP. A further letter of concerns is being sent to the ICB raising the issue of inappropriate oversight of complaints by Louis’ GP surgery in that a junior partner reviewed the handing of a complaint by Louis’ parents about a senior GP’s service delivery.
