A new inquest into the death of Sean Benton at Deepcut Barracks in 1995 starts today. Pte Benton was the first of four trainee soldiers who died of gunshot wounds at the barracks between 1995 and 2002. The previous inquest into his death was quashed in October 2016.
The inquest is being held at Woking Coroner’s Court with HHJ Peter Rook QC as Coroner. He has previously ruled that he would sit without a jury. The inquest will hear from almost 160 witnesses and is expected to run until May.
Francesca Whitelaw and John Goss are instructed for two individual former soldiers. They previously acted in the Cheryl James Inquest in 2016, which also arose out of a death at Deepcut.
