5 Essex Chambers has just published its Pupillage Selection Report 2018. The Report – written by Jeremy Johnson QC, Chair of the Pupillage Committee – offers a unique insight into Chambers’ process for selecting pupils and what impresses our Pupillage Committee.
We are the only Chambers to produce (since 2012) such a detailed report aimed at demystifying the application process and helping prospective applicants secure pupillage. The feedback received is always extremely positive.
Chambers’ continued success relies on attracting high calibre people and our inclusive culture means that all barristers and staff have the opportunity to fulfil their potential.
5 Essex Chambers has a large percentage of highly regarded female barristers – both silks (over 50% of our silks are women) and juniors. We are also proud of our rankings in the Black Solicitors Network Diversity League Table and the Legal Cheek’s “Most” lists and inaugural award for ‘Best Chambers for Training’ 2018.
We are committed to increasing diversity and recruiting talented pupils, whatever their background. In support of giving young people from all backgrounds access to the Bar, our barristers regularly give talks at law schools and schools and take part in social mobility programmes such as the Bar Mobility Scheme and Big Voice London.
We hope the 2018 Pupillage Selection Report will also be of interest to practising lawyers (many of whom will remember the challenges of securing pupillage or training contracts) and can be downloaded here.
