Background

Paige Jones accepts instructions in all of Chambers’ core practice areas, with particular interest in public law, inquests and inquiries, and administrative law.

She is instructed through the Government Legal Department’s ‘Junior Junior’ scheme and acts in cases touching upon national security and other sensitive matters.

Paige has experience advising a range of clients including police forces, government departments and individuals. Paige regularly appears in court including, civil, administrative and coroners’ courts.

Paige qualified with a first-class LLB and a distinction in her LLM in International Human Rights Law at the University of Liverpool. Paige was called to the Bar in 2021, having been marked as Outstanding in the completion of the Barrister Training Course.

Paige published the book ‘A Practical Guide to Non-Pecuniary Damages in Human Rights Act Claims’ with co-author Saara Idelbi in November 2024.

Expertise

Paige has a strong interest in inquest work. Prior to qualification, Paige worked at a law firm in the Northwest of England, and has experience working with bereaved families in inquests, including Article 2 and jury inquests, concerning self-inflicted deaths in prison and mental health settings such as:

  • Those arising from failures in the ACCT process
  • Those arising from failures to assess under the MHA,
  • Those concerning failures to provide sufficient mental health care to service users in the community.
  • An inquest into the death of an unborn baby following the failure of a local council to maintain trees around a major road.
  • Inquests into the deaths of prison inmates who died of natural causes in which questions around the sufficiency of prison health care were raised.

Paige has appeared as an Interested Person in inquest proceedings on behalf of a number of authorities including police forces, NHS Trusts and the IOPC. This has included representing the Chief Constable of South Wales Police arising out of a death in custody which culminated in a misadventure conclusion and represented an NHS Trust in the inquest into a death following complications of surgery.

Paige is also being lead in an inquest into the death of a British soldier, acting on behalf of the Ministry of Defence

Paige has experience in advising on liability and quantum in civil claims for personal injury and damages against police forces, government bodies and/or arising from inquests, including claims with Human Rights Act and Equality Act elements such as:

  • A claim against the police arising out of historic sexual abuse from a 3rd party.
  • A claim for damages following allegations of harassment and a breach of the Data Protection Act 2018/ GDPR / and Misuse of Private Information.
  • A claim for assault and battery arising out of the treatment of a prison inmate by prison staff.
  • Successfully represented the Civil Nuclear Constabulary in a claim by a former employee for an injury allegedly sustained on work premises.

 

Paige has experience in Judicial Review claims, including being instructed on behalf of a public authority in claims raising questions of human rights and police duties.

Paige has a growing public law practice and is regularly instructed by the Ministry of Defence in public law matters such as those raising national security related issues.

Paige has also been instructed by a number of police forces in Judicial Review proceedings including previously representing Devon and Cornwall Police in a Judicial Review permission and urgent consideration hearing.

She has strong knowledge of administrative law and equality and human rights issues.

Prior to pupillage, Paige assisted with a group claim bringing an action against the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions for disability discrimination on behalf on more than 300 claimants.

She has authored a number of articles, particularly relating to civil liberties, in the Legal Action Group Magazine.

Paige co-authored the Practical Guide to Non-Pecuniary Damages in Human Rights Act Claims? with Saara Idelbi.

Matters relating to the retention, management, and handling of information regularly arise throughout Paige’s practice and she has advised clients on information law and data protection issues relating to the GDPR, Data Protection Acts and the Freedom of Information Act. This includes claims for breach of the Data Protection Act in the employment and prison context.

Prior to pupillage, Paige advised a national charity on delicate issues surrounding disclosure of individuals’ health status to prospective employers.

Paige has experience advising on matters of discrimination in the context of employment and the provision of public services. Paige has previously advised a national charity and individuals on delicate matters of health and disability related discrimination and, through her work at the Liverpool Law Clinic, created an employment law information pack for parents of children with long term care needs at Alder Hey Hospital.

Paige has authored a number of articles in the Discrimination Law Association Briefings including:

Paige has a growing public law practice and is instructed in matters such as those raising national security related issues.

Paige is instructed by the Royal Military Police in the Independent Inquiry Relating to Afghanistan, a statutory inquiry into alleged unlawful killings by British Armed Forces in Afghanistan and has a growing inquiries practice.
