Edmund Garnett accepts instructions in all of Chambers’ core practice areas, with a particular interest in police law, public inquiries and public and administrative law.
Edmund regularly appears in the Magistrates’ Court and Crown Court on operational policing matters, and the County Court in civil claims. He is currently instructed on both the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry and the Malkinson Inquiry. He is a member of the Government Legal Department’s “Junior Juniors” scheme.
Edmund was educated at the University of Oxford, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Ancient and Modern History (First Class) and a Master of Studies degree in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies (Distinction). He was elected a scholar of his college and was awarded the Angus Macintyre Prize for most promising historian. During his undergraduate degree, he coached a debating team at a local school.
He completed both the GDL and BPTC at City Law School, as an Exhibitioner and Major Scholar of the Inner Temple. During his legal studies, he volunteered as an advocate with the Schools Exclusion Project, representing the parents of excluded children, and with the Schools Consent Project, conducting workshops for schoolchildren on the legal and ethical parameters of consent.
While at school, Edmund won the ESU National Public Speaking Competition for Schools, leading to an invitation to represent England and Wales at an international competition. More recently, he won the Inner Temple’s Ecclesiastical Law Mooting Competition in 2021.
Prior to pupillage, Edmund worked as a Research and Policy Officer in Parliament, where he specialised in research related to constitutional reform.
