Background

Aimee Riese accepts instructions in all of Chambers’ core practice areas, with a particular interest in administrative and public law and inquests and inquiries.

Aimee has experience advising a wide range of clients, including police forces, government bodies and NHS Trusts across these practice areas.

Prior to joining Chambers in September 2023, Aimee gained considerable experience in inquests and inquiries, as well as advocacy in the criminal courts across a wide range of criminal matters. Aimee was First Junior Counsel to the Chair of the Dame Linda Dobbs Review. She was also instructed as part of the inquiry counsel team on the Undercover Policing Inquiry and was junior counsel to the inquest in a high-profile Article 2 inquest.

Expertise

Aimee has acted as sole counsel in a range of inquests, including Article 2 jury inquests. Clients have included police forces and NHS Trusts. Aimee’s experience as a jury advocate means she is well placed to handle highly sensitive issues appropriately in front of different tribunals. Aimee is well versed in advising on matters relating to Prevention of Future Deaths reports.

Examples of inquests include:

  • Representing a police force following the death of a patient after leaving a mental health care setting;
  • Representing a police force following the death of a man after a period of detention in police custody;
  • Representing an NHS Trust following the death of a patient in hospital, having been detained under section 136 of the Mental Health Act;
  • Junior CTI in the inquest into the death of Ellie Butler.

Aimee advises and represents police forces in all manner of civil claims, applications, policy and wider operational powers. This includes matters relating to national security and terrorism.

Aimee regularly advises on civil claims against the police, including claims for false imprisonment, assault and battery, trespass to property, data breaches, malicious prosecution and claims brought under the Human Rights Act 1998.

Aimee has extensive experience of the full range of civil behaviour orders and injunctions, including, amongst others, Serious Crime Prevention Orders, Stalking Protection Orders, Sexual Harm Prevention Orders and orders under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. Aimee has also represented police forces in the Family Courts in matters relating to disclosure to and from family proceedings.

Matters relating to the retention, management, and handling of information regularly arise throughout Aimee’s practice, and she has advised clients on information law and data protection issues relating to the GDPR and Data Protection Acts. Aimee also has experience in dealing with contentious Subject Access Requests.

Aimee was part of the inquiry counsel team on the Undercover Policing Inquiry.

Aimee was First Junior Counsel to the Chair of the Dame Linda Dobbs Review, believed to be one of the largest reviews of its kind. Aimee led multiple teams of barristers, including those above her level of call, conducted witness interviews, managed disclosure and advised Dame Linda Dobbs. Aimee is well versed in strategic, operational and witness-handling elements of inquiries.
