Peter Laverack Shortlisted for LexisNexis Award

16 January 2019

5 Essex Chambers is delighted to announce that Peter Laverack has been shortlisted for a Pro Bono Award at this year’s LexisNexis Awards.

Peter is the only barrister shortlisted in this important category.

Pro Bono Award

Peter achieved significant success in the landmark case of Jones v Attorney General of Trinidad and Tobago which decriminalised homosexuality in the Caribbean nation and continues to work (alongside Jeremy Johnson QC) on a number of other Commonwealth human rights cases.

In Jones, Peter acted pro bono as Mr Jones’s international law advisor to support the counsels-of-record, Richard Drabble QC and Rishi Dass SC. In an article in The Guardian, Mr Jones wrote of the support he had received and described Peter as  ‘the architect of the legal arguments that won the day’

Before being Called to the Bar, Peter practised as a solicitor and in the NGO sector where he worked on similar cases in other Commonwealth countries.

Peter is shortlisted alongside Ashurst, Corinne McPartland from Herbert Smith Freehills, Shoosmiths and Simmons & Simmons.
