Jury returns Narrative Conclusion in Renewed Inquest into 1997 Police Pursuit

Following the High Court’s decision in Ann Power v Her Majesty’s Senior Coroner for Inner North London and (1) The Commissioner for Police of the Metropolis and (2) Stephen Collier [2017] EWHC 3177, to quash the original inquest into the death of a motorcyclist in the course of a police pursuit in 1997, a renewed inquest was held in February and March 2019. The jury returned a narrative conclusion which included confirmation that there was no contact between the pursuit car and the motorcycle or the motorcyclist and therefore this was not a contributory factor in his death. The jury determined that there was insufficient evidence to determine whether the proximity of the pursuit car to the motorcycle in the road in which the collision occurred was a contributory factor.
