Jonathan Dixey represents MOJ in high-profile prison death inquest

Jonathan Dixey represented the Ministry of Justice in the inquest touching the death of Osvaldas Pagirys, an 18 year old Lithuanian man who died as a result of self-inflicted injuries at HMP Wandsworth. 

Mr Pagirys had initially been arrested for shoplifting sweets but was subsequently found to be the subject of a European Arrest Warrant in Lithuania.

The inquest jury, having heard two weeks of evidence, concluded that Mr Pagirys died as a result of an accident. They completed a narrative questionnaire of nine questions.

The inquest was widely reported, including by The Guardian, The Independent and Channel 4 News.

The Prison and Probation Ombudsman described the circumstances of Mr Pagirys’ death as “appalling and tragic”.

Having heard extensive evidence as to the changes made at HMP Wandsworth, the Coroner declined to make a Prevention of Future Deaths Report.
