John is first junior for the Royal Military Police in the Independent Inquiry relating to Afghanistan, which held its second public hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice on 5-6 July 2023. He is led by Paul Greaney KC, previously leading counsel to the Manchester Arena Inquiry.
The Independent Inquiry relating to Afghanistan, chaired by Lord Justice Haddon-Cave, is investigating high-profile allegations of unlawful killing by United Kingdom Special Forces in the course of deliberate detention operations in Afghanistan between 2010-13. It will also examine the Royal Military Police’s own investigation into these allegations.
The hearings this week dealt with applications by the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Military Police for restriction orders, as well as an application by the Afghan Families for the appointment of special advocates. John’s oral submissions responded to those of the BBC. The Chair’s decision was reserved to a later date.
John has extensive experience in major inquiries and inquests, particularly those relating to national security and to the military. As well as this Inquiry, he is currently instructed in the Dawn Sturgess Inquiry relating to the 2018 novichok poisonings, in the Inquests into the June 2020 Reading Terror Attack, and in other substantial military and police inquests. He previously acted in two of the Deepcut Inquests, as well as in inquests into the deaths of serving personnel both in the UK and on operations abroad.
