John acted for the Charity Commission at the hearing of its High Court claim against Simon Wingett for misapplication of charitable funds from a Wrexham-based cancer charity, Frank Wingett Cancer Relief, of which Mr Wingett was a trustee.
The claim was brought to recover charitable funds from donations and legacies which Mr Wingett had wrongly used to fund a project to build a 210-foot-tall statue of a dragon in the Welsh countryside near Chirk. At the hearing, Mr Wingett’s Defence was struck out and judgment was entered for the Charity Commission in the sum of £117,100.032, as well as almost £10,000 in costs. The funds recovered by the Charity Commission will be used to support the original charitable objects of supporting cancer patients in Wrexham.
The Charity Commission previously removed Frank Wingett Cancer Relief from the register of charities and disqualified Simon Wingett from being a charitable trustee for ten years.
John acts in civil proceedings in the High Court and County Court for regulators and charities, both in financial claims and claims relating to data protection and information.
