Jason Beer QC and Andrew Waters appear in Hillsborough health and safety case

14 May 2019

Jason Beer QC and Andrew Waters (with Simon Antrobus of Crown Office Chambers) instructed by Kieran Walshe, Head of Professional Indemnity and Commercial at DWF LLP, represented Graham Mackrell in criminal proceedings arising from the Hillsborough Disaster on 15th April 1989.  Mr Mackrell was the Company Secretary of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.  He was charged with two offences under the Safety of Sports Grounds Act 1975 and one offence of a breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.   One of the charges under the 1975 Act was discontinued pre-trail following legal argument.  The second charge under the 1975 Act was not proceeded with following legal argument at close of the prosecution case.  Mr Mackrell was found guilty of part of the third charge following a 12 week trial at Preston Crown Court.  He was today fined £6,500 in respect of that offence.  Coverage of the proceedings has been extensive – but includes the BBC, the Guardian, and the Independent.
