Jason Beer KC appointed by Government to conduct end-to-end review of the police accountability system

Chambers is pleased to announce that the Government have today appointed Jason Beer KC, as co-Chair with Dame Lynne Owens, to conduct an end-to-end review of the police accountability system.  They will submit the findings of their independent review to the Home Secretary and Lord Chancellor within 6 months.

The review arises from the Home Office’s White Paper From Local to National: A New Model for Policing.  Jason and Dame Lynne are required by their Terms of Reference rapidly and jointly to assess the systemic issues in the end-to-end police accountability system and make recommendations for reform with the intention of:

• Improving public, including victim and witness, confidence in the police accountability system to sustain public legitimacy
• Improving the confidence of police officers such that they are and feel supported to perform well
• Creating a speedier, simpler and more effective accountability regime
• Distinguishing individual and organisational accountability, with the routes to follow for each, with more precision

Jason will continue his work as a barrister at 5 Essex Chambers whilst he undertakes the review.
