Inquest into police shooting begins

The inquest into the death of Yassar Yaqub began today. Mr Yaqub was fatally shot by a specialist West Yorkshire Police firearms officer on 2 January 2017 during a police operation at the exit lane of junction 24 on the M62 motorway.

The inquest will examine the actions of the firearms officer, known as V39, as well as the planning of the operation and the decision to stop the vehicle in which Mr Yaqub was travelling on the M62.

The inquest, which is being heard before the Recorder of Leeds sitting with a jury, is expected to last for up to eight weeks.
