ICJ Advisory Opinion – Remi Reichhold is representing the Republic of Mauritius

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is holding hearings this week on a request for an advisory opinion from the UN General Assembly on the legal consequences of the separation of the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius in 1965. 

The Chagos Archipelago was detached from Mauritius by the UK in 1965, when Mauritius was still a colony. The ICJ has been asked to consider whether the process of decolonisation of Mauritius was lawfully completed, and on the legal consequences that arise from the continuing administration of the Chagos Archipelago by the UK.

Twenty-two States and the African Union are expected to make oral submissions before the Court.  Remi Reichhold is representing the Republic of Mauritius.
