Divisional Court orders four fresh inquests; Alex Ustych represents the Claimant Senior Coroner

12 October 2023

Alex represented His Majesty’s Coroner for Stoke on Trent and North Staffordshire at the hearing of applications made under section 13 of the Coroner’s Act 1988 to (a) quash Assistant Coroners’ conclusions in four inquests and (b) for an order that fresh inquests be held. The Divisional Court (Lady Justice Macur and Mr Justice Garnham) granted all four applications.

Alex advised the Senior Coroner from the outset and drafted the fiat applications to the Attorney General as well as the Part 8 proceedings.

Alex is regularly instructed by organisations and individuals in complex and sensitive inquests, as well as in linked civil claims.  Alex was one of Grenfell Tower Inquiry’s junior counsel team leaders and the lead counsel for NHS Digital in the COVID-19 Inquiry.
