In May 2022 we reported on the £7.5 million fine which the ICO handed to Clearview AI Inc in an enforcement notice. That was against the background of action from the Italian and French regulators. A fortnight ago, the Hellenic Data Protection Authority added itself to the list, with a fine of €20 million. The company has also faced litigation in America.
Clearview is a company which produces a facial recognition database containing 20 billion images of people’s faces which were harvested from open sources.
The Greek decision was a national one. The regulator has banned the company from collecting and processing the personal data of Greek nationals and to delete any such data which it has already collected. The regulator held that there was a breach of the legality and transparency principles of the GDPR.
Clearview continues to deny that it is subject to the GDPR.
It has been reported that Clearview has appealed the decision of the ICO.
