The final hearing of the inquest touching the death of Zara Aleena commenced on 3 June 2024 at the East London Coroner’s Court.
Zara Aleena was brutally attacked, sexually assaulted and murdered as she walked home from a night out in Ilford in June 2022. The perpetrator was on licence and under the supervision of the Probation Service having recently been released from prison. At the time of the murder he was subject to recall to prison following his failure to attend Probation appointments. The Interested Persons at the Inquest include His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service and the Metropolitan Police Service who had been tasked with locating the perpetrator in order to return him to prison. The inquest will consider the circumstances by which Zara Aleena came by her death, including whether any actions or omissions of state bodies contributed to her death.
