5 Essex hosts events for the American Inns of Court delegation visiting Gray’s Inn

This week, Gray’s Inn will host a visiting delegation from the American Inns of Court (AIC) comprising senior practitioners and judges at state and federal level.

5 Essex was delighted to be asked to organise two events for the AIC delegation focused on explaining features of the UK Bar that may differ from the American practice. Zander Goss will chair panels comprising a range of members of Chambers.

The first talk on 30 September covers “Advocacy in the English system”, looking at:

• Advocacy teaching, ethics, and etiquette in England – Claire Palmer
• The experience of learning advocacy and the types of advocacy in junior practice – Paige Jones
• Distinctive features of inquisitorial versus adversarial advocacy – Bilal Rawat

The second event on 4 October on “Clerking and the Chambers Model” will cover:

• The chambers model of providing legal services – Fiona Barton KC
• How clerks and the Chambers model enable career progression – David Messling
• Views on the Chambers model from a former solicitor now at the Bar – Peter Laverack

Following each session the speakers and delegates will have opportunity to ask each other questions as part of this international exchange of legal experience.
