5 Essex Chambers wins Legal Cheek’s Best Chambers for Training Award 2018

22 March 2018

5 Essex Chambers is delighted to announce that it was the winner of Legal Cheek’s inaugural Best Chambers for Training award at last night’s Legal Cheek Awards 2018.

The winner was selected from the results of the Legal Cheek Pupil and Junior Barrister Survey completed by 500 pupils and junior barristers at over 60 leading chambers. The shortlist and some of the analysis can be found here

Founded in 2011 by journalist Alex Aldridge, Legal Cheek is the UK’s leading news source for junior lawyers and law students. With contributing writers such as Joshua Rozenberg, Legal Cheek offers a sometimes-irreverent take on the biggest legal news stories of the day. It also works hard to demystify the legal world, helping to increase access to the legal profession.

This is a goal shared by Chambers and our Pupillage Committee. As part of our work to increase access and diversity at the Bar, in 2012, we were the first chambers to publish an annual report of our pupillage application round. (last year’s is available here).  We were also the first chambers to offer a twitter handle, @pupillages, dedicated to pupillage advice.  We give talks at law schools and schools (catch Georgina Wolfe speaking at Deptford School in April) and take part in social mobility programmes such as the Bar Mobility Scheme and Big Voice London (at which Jeremy Johnson QC will be appearing later this month).

Our pupillage process itself provides first rate instruction with pupil supervisors who are leaders in their fields, an in-house advocacy training package provided by Alastair Hodge (an Inner Temple bencher and advocacy trainer) and a talks programme offered by members of chambers. The quality of work from day one also attracted Legal Cheek’s attention who noticed that our pupils were involved in 'headline-grabbing' cases as soon as they started on their feet, from the Deepcut Inquests, the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse and the Tunisian Shooting Inquests.
